Doing a Reading is Scary

Those of you who know me are aware I don’t really like doing readings per se. I am much happier doing my books and giving talks where I can teach people or instruct them in the ways of mediumship, healing and what to watch out for from those who may not be what they say they are or who are practising in a not altogether honest way.

From time to time though, I get requests for readings and they all seem to come together. When this happens, they always ask how they can pay me and so I put my paypal buttons on the site for a while again. I used not to charge at all but got taken advantage of – badly, then I tried donations only, but found left to their own devices people left far too much money and so now I give guidelines to cover the time it takes for me to do them. From time to time when someone in need is put in my path, I still do my readings for free.

I think it is the spirit world keeping me in touch with the gifts provided to me and ‘to keep them lubricated’ for want of a better way to put it. Each time I am asked to do a reading I panic and think ‘Oh, God, they’ve paid me. What if I can’t get anything or it is rubbish’. If no one has paid for a reading I am more relaxed about it. Once payment is made I feel under pressure and guilty for taking their money.

I know it is normal for payment to be made for one’s time and I shouldn’t feel guilty, but it doesn’t sit well with me really and I am always relieved when a reading goes well. The worst times are when people want nothing more than ‘fortune telling’. You can give a darned good reading, but because it isn’t ‘fortune telling’ they aren’t happy. Luckily, this very rarely happens but that is one time I never feel guilty for being paid and would never refund just because it isn’t what they wanted. I will always refund monies paid if I feel I haven’t done a good enough reading as I think that is only fair, but I won’t if it’s because you wanted to hear you’d win the lottery and I never said you would.

One thing most people don’t understand about having a reading is that the medium doesn’t choose what information they get, it is just given to them somehow. Being a natural and honest medium, I give what you need, not what you want and this is how all natural and honest mediums work. If you leave a reading and have been told all you want to hear, then chances are you fed information to the one doing the reading and they have told you everything you wanted and most of it will probably be rubbish.

My favourite readings are the ones where people have lost someone close and are struggling to cope with their loss. After their readings, they are often given so much comfort that they go away feeling a hundred times better than before their reading. This is what makes it all worthwhile and is to me what mediumship is meant to be about. It isn’t a party game, it isn’t entertainment, but it is to be used seriously and responsibly for the right reasons. Done in this way, it gives me as much warmth and pleasure as the one receiving it.

My paypal buttons have been up for about a week now and will soon be coming down again. I have no doubt I’ll be guided when to put them back up, but in the meantime, the readings will stop and I shall get on with my other work of writing and public speaking. If any of you reading this ever want a speaker about being a sceptical medium – I’m your girl!
