How Do I know If I’m a Spiritualist?

The above question is one I often see in my stats as it is something often put into search engines. So many people think being a medium is the same as being a spiritualist. To them, it is one and the same thing and just a different name for it. Spiritualism is not being a medium, it is a belief system like any other in the world. It’s just that many people calling themselves spiritualists wish to learn to become mediums and some natural born mediums have chosen to join the spiritualist movement and work within it for lack of anywhere else to go under the mistaken belief one has to have certificates to practice their gifts.

Asking the above question is akin to asking, ‘How do I know if I’m I a Catholic or a Jew or Muslim’. Belonging to any of these religious beliefs (and spiritualism is not a religious belief) doesn’t make us anything more than being members of their churches. Spiritualism is exactly the same. By going along and joining their church, it doesn’t make you a medium any more than going to a Christian church would make you a vicar or priest.

To be a medium, you are either born with the varying gifts – and you’ll usually know if you have been as strange things will have been happening to you all your life, or you will go to a spiritualist church and ask to learn to be one. In some cases, some natural born mediums will go to a spiritualist church as they have nowhere else to go in order to ask what’s happening to them. Most who do this will recognise quite quickly the teachings are not suited to natural mediums, but others will stay and work within the confines of the spiritualist movement regardless.

This is all personal choice, but just belonging to their groups, or churches as they like to call them, does not make you all mediums and the word spiritualist does not mean being  a medium. I am sure the confusion probably lies in the fact that up until now, spiritualism is the only thing people connect with mediumship and people giving messages or information about their loved ones. There has been nowhere else, or anyone else, to go to and so they have had the unrivalled market for want of a better term. They were all that was known to be on offer, so that’s where people went.

That is all changing though as others are now offering an alternative for natural mediums so they too can have the help and advice they need. There have always been mediums who work as individuals without having had classes, development or certificates, but they work quietly getting on with their work and it is because they are working as individuals and not as part of a big body that it has been easy for those unaware of how it all works to not notice them.

There are even many people today under the mistaken belief that unless you are a spiritualist and have certificates, you aren’t a real medium and it’s actually the other way around. Natural mediums don’t need classes, workshops or certificates because they already are what these other people want to be.

Most people attending spiritualist churches aren’t mediums – some are, but the majority just go there for their services and to belong to something they believe in. Just like any other church or place of worship in the world, it is somewhere for like minded people of similar beliefs to belong – no more, no less and as I said earlier, being a member doesn’t make you a medium.

  1. I just love your site, but after being attacked by so many so called spiritual people/ministers (that have to sit in circle with there palms facing up wards for 30 years to justify their self belief) lol, and historical could these people be modern day witch hunters.. because in some way they feel threatened by our natural ability.

“To be a medium, you are either born with the varying gifts – and you’ll usually know if you have been as strange things will have been happening to you all your life”

    and -

“There are even many people today under the mistaken belief that unless you are a spiritualist and have certificates, you aren’t a real medium and it’s actually the other way around.”

This fab “Natural mediums don’t need classes, workshops or certificates because they already are what these other people want to be.”

I’m thinking about sending your web link to all these people..

Sadly for some Jo public if they cant see some printed minister certificate or animal healer certificate or I completed my Lego course certificate they won’t know what they think is real – and thats not their fault.

    Thank you.
